Amazon: Flight to Iquitos/ Boat ride to lodge/ First Hike/ Almost got killed by lightning

Hello Everyone! Finally got some internet connection here in Lima after 8 days in the Amazon. Amy and I had a long layover in Miami and were able to stop for a Mojito (it really is a manly drink when you're in Miami, I swear) and then took the long flight to Iquitos, Peru. We tried to pass ourselves off as Latin during our travels but that ended once Amy tried to order soft drinks from the customs lady!

The airport in Iquitos had two broken down airplanes in it and one working one (the one we were on). We met up with Amy's dad and brother and hopped on our bus, closed the door, and the door fell off. That should some up the city of Iquitos. It is a fun city though. The taxis are 3 wheeled motorbikes that sometimes obey traffic laws. "There are no McDonalds in Iquitos" says Edson, our guide. It's population is over half a million and the largest city within thousands of miles.

After a 3 hour boat ride up the Amazon we arrived at our lodge, which is like the Swiss Family Robinson Tree City. The food there was amazing. The best chicken Amy and I have ever had was cooked by our boat driver named Gato. Our first hike ended in a near death experience; here's how. We were told not to touch a certain plant. So after the second time Amy's dad grabbed the plant, Amy was playing doctor and pulling needles out. About 30 feet in front of us lightening struck. We actually saw the blinding light and the sound was deafening. The first words uttered were from our guide, "We could have died right now". We all ran back to the lodge.

One of the best parts about the lodge was that it served beer. The two choices were Pilsen Callao and Cristal, both Peruvian beers. They tasted like a smoother, yet hoppier Tecate. They tasted a little like heaven.

Next post will cover the rest of the Amazon!
