Day 1 (Raratonga arrival/ Muri Beach):

After an uneventful but long flight from Los Angelos to Raratonga (the biggest Cook Island), Tom, Wendy, Mike and I were given a warm reception, except for one thing. Like Hawaii, we were given lays when we touched ground. However, this time, the gardenia lays were half dead and once they were around our necks, we noticed that they were COVERED with tiny bugs! Yeah, we didn’t wear them for long… However, that was the only bad part of this entire trip, and honestly, that’s not that bad. We stayed at the Muri Beachcomer, which has a suite of bungalows overlooking the most beautiful lagoon in Raratonga at the most perfect spot on the beach. The view from their deck is directly in the middle of two islands. One island is great for snorkeling, the other one looks exactly like Gilligan’s Island, and right in the middle over turquoise calm waters is where the sunrise appears. Soft white sand is everywhere, and the waves are never bad because the lagoon is completely protected by a large reef that surrounds the entire island. Not bad, not bad at all.
We were anxious to do some snorkeling, and Mike and I quickly got out into the coral-filled water. Of note, we met our aquatic nemesis, the Bull Fish. We don’t know what it is actually called, but this multi-colored fish charged us, and then retreated, then charged us again, and again and again. “Bull Fish” is more fitting. Also, in what almost looked like a cartoon, Mike went to step on the sand (as it is wrong to stand on coral), and set his foot onto a flounder! I’m not sure who was more startled, but my side hurt from laughing so hard!
A couple other things marked this day such as the $15 Bloody Marys (which by the way had no alcohol), the discovery of the cheese scone, delicious meals, and meeting our first hermit crabs. We also found tons of sea cucumbers that were so plentiful that sometimes it was hard to avoid stepping on them! Besides that, we all floated in the water, read our books, and took in the relaxation of our first day.
