Stewart Island, the southernmost and third largest island in New Zealand is known for its native birds. Our favorite part was taking a small boat over a windy channel that had little penguins swimming in it to the Ulva Island. They iradicated ALL rodents from there and the native bird population has been coaxed back to life there. We spent the day on a scavanger hunt finding all the native birds we could. It was great! One bird, robin-like, hopped right up to our feet with no fear of us. Just lovely. It started pouring which made the boatride choppy on the ride back, but it made for perfect, book reading weather that night.
The boatride back was probably the choppiest ride we have ever taken. 20 foot swells that our stomach got to experience too. The albatrosses loved it though and it was so great to watch them in their element.
