Arches National Park

What a fabulous day! We woke up in a primitive Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campsite along the Colorado River. The rippling river and a couple raven greeting our arrival to the day. We got to Arches National Park early, and hiked a short trail to look at Delicate Arch. We wish we could have had more time to actually get to the arch because it looked secluded and beautiful, but it's a 3 mile hike and we needed to get going to Fiery Furnace! There was also an arch hike at the northern tip of the park-- next time I suppose. There is just so much to do!

Oh, so no crap, guess what we saw-- a jack rabbit! I had never seen one before. They are wily and tall and fast... like Mikey!

Around 8:50 am, we began our adventure in the the FIERY FURNACE! We spent hours bouldering around, exploring, finding signs of wildlife everywhere, hopping, climbing, basically having a ball! We didn't see another person for 3 hours! Our favorite part was climbing the canyon up to the top of a fin, which is a mountain that has been eroded into the shape of a huge fin (like a pod of dolphins that are swimming along the surface of the earth. There were some precarious parts, but it just made us loves this place more! We saw some canyon wrens, rock squirrels, and tons of tracks. It was cloudy with a breeze, so it was just perfect for hiking in a desert. They say that it is easy to get turned around in the Fiery Furnace. We always knew where we were and where be had been, just not where to go. They don't provide a map, so it's very "choose your own adventure." It is a very delicate ecosystem so we had to watch a video, talk with a ranger and get a $4 permit to walk in the area unescorted. http://www.climb-utah.com/Moab/furnace.htm

After bouldering for hours, we tried to find the end of the trail- instead we found a mini arch! It was so special because it was like our own personal arch! It took us 2 tries to find where the beginning of the trail meets the end, but along the way, we had a great little lunch on a perfect rock! I have to admit, I was tired, but my excitement for the place kept me moving! Mike couldn't have been happier getting his adventure fix. A perfect adventure!

Getting to Bryce National Park, well, let's just say there were flash floods, lightning hitting the ground, and hail. Needless to say, we stayed in a cabin a the Red Canyon Cabins and RV Park instead of camping. It was a perfect little place to wait out the storm. Gus would not have done well in this storm.
