Mike’s Birthday/ Peking Duck and Chinese Acrobats

For months, Mike has been saying that all he wants for his birthday this year is Peking Duck and Chinese Acrobats. Ask and he shall receive! We went to the best Peking Duck in town at a restaurant that could have cost an arm and a leg in the States, but was comparatively cheap here, and wow was it delicious! The chef sliced the golden duck right in front of us and presented it so beautifully it looked like art.

When we finished the lovely dinner (yes, we were wearing sneakers in a 4-Star restaurant), we needed to catch a taxi across town to see the Chinese Acrobats. Unfortunately, Beijing is just about the only city where the demand for taxis far outweighs the supply. It took forever to get a taxi and we almost missed the beginning of the performance because of it. Taxis will literally not take you if you aren’t far enough for them or they just don’t feel like it. Not just to foreigners. Locals were having a tough time too. But hey, we got there.

The Chinese Acrobats were simply fantastic. It is amazing the precision, beauty, flexibility and strength these young people display. We were also joined with an auditorium filled with panda hat wearing children on a school trip. We ooohhhed and aaaahhed right with them! There is a reason that China did so well in gymnastics during the Olympics. Mike was happy to have been able to do exactly what he wanted on his birthday!
