Colorado Springs to Denver

This morning, we had a lovely breakfast of Eggos and fresh fruit before we hit the road. Our first stop was REI where I picked up an awesome down sleeping bag and a sleeping pad. Mike said he has never seen me spend so much money at once without batting an eye. These items will most certainly join me on the world trip!

Our next stop was the aptly named "Garden of the Gods" in Colorado Springs. Donated to the public in 1909 by the family of Charles Elliott Perkins, the head of the Burlington Railroad, the Garden of the Gods got his name by 2 surveyors of the area in 1859. While exploring nearby locations, they came upon a beautiful area of sandstone formations. M. S. Beach, one of the surveyors, suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden" when the country grew up. His companion, Rufus Cable, a "young and poetic man", exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods." And the name stuck. This was our first "rockin' rock formation we saw on this trip. I really liked the Kissing Camels (they looked so real!), and Mike was struck by the Cathedral. Notable was the MAJESTIC PIGEON that sat atop a huge rock outcropping. He was just... beautiful!! (hehe). Unfortunately, there was not a lot of rock climbing, but we did see a spotted towhee! http://www.gardenofgods.com/home/index.cfm

Next, Denver, the micro brew capital of the world (or country), I'm not sure. 16th St. is the downtown and beer tasting was the game. Mike's fav was something Maple and mine was the Alaska something that we tried at a bar called Pi (as in the numerical sign of 3.14.....)

We happened to come to Denver the say the Rockies were playing the Cub so we just had to go. And what a game it was! Troy Tulowitzski hit for the cycle! Wow! I had never seen that before! We were in just about the WORST seats you can imagine (top corner of the right field where you couldn't even see the whole field). So, we moved. Jorge de la Rosa (or George of the Rose as we preferred to call him) did great on the mound, giving up only 1 run and pitched until the 8th Inning. Unfortunately, Street took his place, and in less than an inning he gave up 4 RUNS! One thing to note: this place is like Wrigley Field West, so if the Chicago Cubs are playing against the Rockies, expect more Cubbies fans than Rockies fans!
