Back in the swamp, this time on the "grid"-- yes we took the blue pill (or red- whichever keeps us in our happy little world on the grid). We were looking for monos (monkeys) but only found evidence of them, not the real thing. We did see a wicked cool woodpecker with a solid red head though! The Grid was made by researchers and Amazonia Expeditions to assis in future research. It is a 2km x 2km sq with straight-ish trails along the was. In there are varied ecotones depending on average water levels and thus plant life. At the end, I was tired, but it was cool to explore such a research friendly place (for the Amazon that is... lots of mud, etc.)
That afternoon, we all did our part to make blow darts. Lots of widdling, hacking, drawing, searing, and then playing! Mike and I had a duel with the blow darts. I shot first and missed. Then he shot and actually hit my hand! And it stuck! It drew blood even! I'm just glad that there wasn't any poison dart frog good on the tip!
At night, the head researcher, Alfredo, talked to us about the research and many issues that currently face the Amazon in Peru. It was really interesting, but the day really tuckered us all out. Asleep by 9:10.
