Unfruitful Search for Hoatzin/ Waterlogged Boots/ River Otter/ Arrival to Research Station/ Fishing

Long sweaty hike to see the hoatzin. Over and through vines, swamp, stumps, and the occasional spikey palm. All of us got at lease one rubber boot full of water from a mis-step or two. We were really in the jungle! Finally got to the water hyicenth clogged lake but no hoatzin... we must have gotten there a little late in the morning. We did see a screaming something bird. It was black and white and was about the size of a big turkey- really pretty. We also saw a jackarah (sp) bird- big toes that walked on lily pads- National Geographic did a special on them once.

We were all soaked to the bone with sweat and the shower at the research station was welcomed. Come to think of it, after every hike, the shower was welcomed! I wasn't feeling well, and everyone was a bit tired, so we all napped. And it was good.

Afterward, we went fishing. Mike caught basically the only fish worth keeping, about 12 inches I think. The rest of them were tiny, but I sure had fun releasing them! Dad caught a couple, but he was really bird watching!

That night, we met Erica and Adrian who are also going on a trip around the world. We also linked back up with Lance and Christine, an older couple that we did the zipline with who were wicked cool and hella interesting! We might link up with Erica and Adrian in Nepal/India. Cross your fingers!
